Some names in specialty coffee need no introduction. The Barn is one of them.
Founded in Berlin in 2010 by Ralf Rüller, The Barn is widely regarded as one of the most influential specialty coffee roasters in Europe. What began as a single café in the city's historic Scheunenviertel district quickly grew into something much larger: a roastery, a network of cafés across Berlin and beyond, and a benchmark for what specialty coffee can and should be.
Ralf's starting point was simple. After years in London, he returned to Berlin and noticed there was no coffee place that matched what he had in mind: honest, high-quality specialty coffee roasted with real attention to origin and craft. So he built it himself.
The Barn sources only single origin coffees, all scoring 86 points or above on the SCA scale. They work directly with farmers, paying prices that reflect quality and support long-term relationships at origin. Every bag is seasonal, every roast developed to bring out what makes that particular coffee worth drinking.
Their roasting style is light, clean, and fully developed, focused on transparency and letting the natural character of each coffee come through. It is a style that has helped define modern European specialty coffee.
In 2025, The Barn was named Roaster of the Year, confirming what the specialty coffee community already knew: this is a roastery that has been pushing the standard forward for over a decade.
At Cafeato, featuring The Barn felt like a natural choice. Their commitment to quality, traceability, and craft aligns with everything we look for in a roaster.
As part of our monthly specialty coffee subscription at Cafeato, we brought The Barn's seasonal single origins directly to your door.
